Actually a normal Wednesday, that was a good two weeks ago: working, cutting hair and driving home. At least if you only look at the keywords that designate this day. Going into detail shows the difference.
Although I was also working, but I’m going to leave shortly before five o’clock to get my first train to Mannheim, from there to Munich. Glashütte Union had invited to the “Union Glashütte Gentleman’s Brunch” . The plan was to take a look at their new collection next to the brunch as well as to get a new hairstyle including a shave.
How everything relates to exactly what quality watches with a Barber Shop have on your hat and why a few hours train ride but can be pretty productive you will learn below.
Union Glashütte invites to the presentation of the current collection to Munich
At the end of last week I was invited to come and see if I would like to get to know the current collection of Union Glashütte at a joint brunch. This should be presented in a Barber shop, in which one (s) if necessary, even cut the hair and can shave the beard.
Short checked the remaining holidays for 2016, seen in the mirror that the next hairdressing appointment is overdue anyway and clarified the scheduling of the coming week with the woman. It was already clear that I will go to Munich on Wednesday. Incidentally, on the way there I typed these first lines.
Let’s go to Munich
It is possible to reach Munich by train, very good. Only the whole thing is at the expense of my usual bedtime. But you have to make sacrifices. At least now and then. Therefore, it was 04:40 clock to get up, get ready, pack your bag and go to the station. First stopover Mannheim – transfer to the ICE – then in one go through the direction of Munich.
The early morning hours, I have been able to make good use of this. In addition to the fact that I finished reading my latest Kindle eBook, the train journey brought enough time to write some new style tips that will be featured here on the blog.
Of course you could also catch up on the rest of your sleep. But after that somehow I was not, much more I wanted to be a bit productive and “awake work” for the upcoming presentation of the new Union Glashütte collection, which I was very curious.
Presentation of Union Glashütte collection at Barber House, Munich
Why is Union Glashütte inviting to present the new collection in a Barber shop? The idea behind it was not very clear to me until the arrival on location, so I would like to enlighten you a little bit as well.
The destination of the trip to Munich was the Barber House in the Fraunhoferstrasse 20. One of two companies of the owner Dirk Schlobach. This stands out consciously and clearly from other hairdressers and barber shops. On the one hand there are only haircuts, shaves and treatments offered for men, on the other hand, the shop is classic, elegant and, above all, not intrusive. Quasi, a place that invites you to relax and unwind from everyday life and then leaves you with a new hairstyle.
Incidentally, this was the case with me as well, but more on that later. First, I would like to talk a little about the second host, who has invited to the event: Union Glashütte .
Union Glashütte a watch brand with over 120 years of history
Do not worry, we will not go into the history of Union Glashütte in detail. This is not necessary, you can read the information completely on their website. It is only important to give a first impression to give you a rough picture of Union Glashütte and what they do.
As already indicated, the Union Glashütte brand first appeared 120 years ago, to be precise in 1893, the light of day. The roots of the company lie in the small Saxon town of Glashütte, which is considered a traditional center of German watchmaking and is known far beyond Germany.
The company was founded by the renowned watch dealer Johannes Dürrstein, who was not only a connoisseur of international watchmaking but also a successful businessman. In this position, he realized that there is a lack of Glashütte quality on the market for a quality watch that more than a few can afford.
From then on, the name Union Glashütte was used to make watches that became known not only for their quality but also for their affordable prices. Like many others, the company fell victim to the Great Depression.
A few decades later, in 1997, the brand is remembered and founds Glashütter Union GmbH, which was acquired three years later by Swatch Group AG. Nevertheless, the origins of the brand are not forgotten: high quality mechanical and classically beautiful watches at affordable prices.
And these are still viewed today, so that the brand finds its place among the Glashütte watch brands, which stands for precision “Made in Germany” worldwide. But let us return from the history of the Glashütte brand to today and take a look at the current Union Glashütte collection in detail.
Union Glashütte Collection 2017 – a look and behind
First of all, with regard to the technical details, I can not and will not go too deeply into the depth, I just do not have the technical knowledge for that. Instead, I try to give a rough overview of Union Glashütte’s offer, to discuss facelifts of well-known collections, and to give a little insight behind the scenes.
Because this was also granted to me, so I had the opportunity to exchange with Tobias Hamann the master watchmaker / production manager of Union Glashütte, who has completed his watchmaker training in Glashütte and now leads a team of 16 watchmakers at Union Glashütte.
Interesting and quite understandable for me was the fact that his team and he are burning for Union Glashütte watches. It’s not just a job, it’s a vocation. Very well, he also indicated that he would like to stay in bed on a Monday morning and not necessarily want to work – but conversely, it does not matter to him on the evening time to stay two hours longer when it’s work requires.
Take a look at the production of Union Glashütte
In his role as production manager, he is close to the point not only in the production of current models, but also when it comes to creating very special pieces – for example for the Sachsen Rally or the 125th Anniversary.
During the conversation it became clear that Union Glashütte had internalized the values rediscovered in 1997 even today. What one alone recognizes by the fact that every work step, which is done is checked again in the most accurate. Wrist watches do not simply go out to the customer, numerous tests have previously been on the plan.
Because no matter whether 1,100 euros “entry-level” model or the limited special edition for 10,000 euros up, the function and the high quality must be the same for all watches. Sometimes it seems that the quality checks take more time than the actual production. But only in this way can the high quality standard of Union Glashütte be maintained.
The manufacturing itself is divided into several areas, such as the parts production in which individual components and decorations are created, which give the mechanical movements of Union Glashütte their unmistakable character.
In the factory assembly, the mechanical hearts of the clocks are brought to life. There, for the first time, numerous filigree components meet, which are put together by hand with great tact.
Even with such a supposedly simple task as mounting and aligning the hands, the smallest details matter. After all, the face of the watch is the first thing the customer gets to see and that must be perfect. Therefore, in the field of watch-head assembly, technical requirements with aesthetic requirements go hand in hand.
After production, numerous quality checks are required before the watch leaves the house of Union Glashütte. This is how water resistance, gait, appearance and functionality are checked for the last time.
Union Glashütte Collection 2017 – that’s what convinces the watch brand
About 8,000 watches leave the watch brand each year. The brand has remained true to its origins and offers suitable copies in every price range. With the Viro collection – which received a facelift for 2017 – you move in the wristwatches, which you can afford as a “normal earner”. On the other copies you have to save a little longer.
The Viro collection shines through its facelift, which has brought this narrower hands and indexes among other things. In addition, the entire design was deliberately “simplified” – but without optically removing the watches too far from their origin.
Generally it is the fact that the facelifts of the Union Glashütte models should raise the clocks to the current state of the art, but always with the ulterior motive to maintain the basic idea of each model. So today’s Viro buyers will still be able to connect with each other in forty years if they see a then current Viro model.
Before I go into the other collections, I have to say that I do indeed think that a watch in the Viro collection by Union Glashütte is a very reasonable introduction to the world of high-quality automatic watches. My personal favorite from the program of the watch brand I have already found with the D011.407.11.051.00 Viro. Convinces me here in addition to the technical facts, especially their appearance of dark dial with a stainless steel bracelet – a clock, which can be worn on any occasion.
In addition to the models of the Viro collection, the Belisar Chronograph Moonphase, Belisar Chronograph and Belisar Pilot Power Reserve Sachsen Classic 2016 were also on display. All wristwatches, which convinced in their own special way and inspired. And I have to say that I was fascinated by the simple look of the Viro collection.
If I had to choose a watch, which is a little more eye-catching but no less pretty, this would be the Belisar Chronograph Moonphase. This timepiece features all the full calendar displays as well as a mechanical chronograph movement with up to 60 hours of power reserve. The eponymous moon phase display is missing, of course, not synonymous.
The screwed sapphire crystal back also gives an unrestricted view of the built movement. In terms of price, this model is a bit out of the “automatic entry-level” – starting from 2,980 euros, but not quite out of reach.
A special feature of the presentation of the Union Glashütte models was the 1893 collection, which not only remembers the origins of the brand by its name, but also the details of traditional watchmaking. Their design is mainly based on old pocket watches and takes up this successfully in the form of a wristwatch.
Compared to, for example, the Viro models, the small second can be found at six o’clock. For example, the seconds indicator is removed from its original position at hour and minute hands and positions above six o’clock. A detail that knows how to please.
Quality, well thought-out design and the attention to detail know how to convince
To conclude, I have to say that Union Glashütte’s watches have convinced me with three points: quality, thoughtful design and attention to detail. Because all of this you notice the clocks – no matter whether entry-level model or limited special edition.
In addition, it was interesting to learn that the company produced completely in Germany and truly deserves the quality seal “Made in Germany”. Since I have already received some information from the sewing box for upcoming models, thoughts and development steps, I am firmly convinced that there is only one direction for the brand: forward.
Barber House, Munich – Switch off, sit back and be pampered
In addition to the watches of Union Glashütte, of course, the Barber House fascinated me. If this contrasts clearly with the 0815 barber around the corner. Which alone is due to the fact that for the most part barbers are employed, who are quasi experts for men’s hairstyles and beards.
I could convince myself that this was not just a testimony, but actually the case. Because as mentioned at the beginning of the article, it was time again for a hairdresser visit and a good shave known not to hurt. That’s why I opted for the full program with the Steve McQueen Package.
Steve McQueen Package at Barber House, Munich
This includes hair cutting, classic wet shaving, ear and facial hair removal and massage. Going into detail hides behind the hair cutting not only create scissors and go on it cut. First of all, the hair is washed and shampooed.
After that, the hair was cut, first these were shortened with me laterally to 10 mm with the razor, then various scissors were used, which made the transition from side hair to upper hair gentler and more uniform. Followed by a fine-tuning with the razor to define subtleties on the outer contours.
What surprised me a bit was the fact that with the razor even on the top and side hair last protruding hair were removed. At first it felt a bit strange, but at least I was completely convinced by the result. Afterwards, the loose hairs were first blown away, before the hair was washed again, then blown again and finally styled.
Surely this was the longest time I spent on a chair for a hairstyle, but it is also one of the best results, and I did not feel the time was too long. For the fact that I felt in good hands, I had to worry about the result and could let my mind run wild and just relax. So I imagine a gentleman ‘s barber treatment! I’m curious to see if the proposal for a branch opening in Heidelberg is received. One customer would have already won.
In addition to hair cutting was also the shaving with the razor on. I have been used to the same with my planing machine. Although I have to say that experienced barber hands get out of the shaving a little more here than I, who swings the planer for a few minutes every three days.
Nevertheless, this was also a pleasant experience, despite little beard growth, to be shaved with a razor. From the opening of the pores by special pre-shave balm and hot towels on the skin, on the actual shaving with the knife in conjunction with brushed shaving cream on the face to the final finish with aftershave and massage, I felt throughout good. And that despite the fact that a very sharp knife was always within reach. But fortunately, Barber House knows how to handle razors and scissors.
Glashütte Union x Barber House – a combination that works
With this gentleman’s brunch, not only Glashütte Union, but also the Barber House in Munich has fascinated me. By itself, two companies that know how to inspire – unbeatable in this combination. An event that left an impression.
For me, it was a first contact with the watches of Union Glashütte, far from press photos, corporate website and Co. – combined with the then partially exclusive, highly interesting insights behind the scenes of the watch brand, you have at least convinced me and made the fan of the brand. And now, with the model from the Viro collection, I have found another goal worth saving.
The Barber House in Munich has convinced me by the professional treatment as well as the thoughtful concept of a barber only for men. A place of relaxation and to disconnect from everyday life. Not only did I recognize this, but also many women who are giving corresponding treatment vouchers to their husbands just at Christmas time. This time only as a small tip on the edge of the women reading here.
But honestly, just have a look and see for yourself that Barber House can be found at Fraunhoferstraße 20, 80333 Munich – more information is available at BarberHouse.com . And who is interested in the Union Glashütte watches is right here or at a corresponding jeweler. From 2017, there will also be a new website, so let’s drop by later.
Of course, there was also something to eat – was rather incidental on that day; even if it was delicious! But only on the edge …
